ALP1 - Final Exam

*** For shots 1-2-3 I've put the green gel over my flash because of the neon light. But I understood that if I'm not lighting my background with the neon light or whatever light it is (like tungsten) I don't need to balance my flash with a gel. It's only if I'm working with to different source of light in the same image. As I did for the shot #4 with the green gel because I needed my subject to be in the same color than the ambient light of the neon tube.

SHOT #1

- Shot settings = 1/125 f9 100 ISO

- Flash power = 1/2 power

- Subject was lit with the flash bouncing 45˚ to the ceiling to create a small butterfly style and to have a softer lighting on her.

SHOT #2

- Shot settings = 1/125 f9 100 ISO

- Flash power = Full power

- To create one side lit and the other side more in soft shadow, I placed my model next to a white wall and bounced my light directly on the wall. But I realized that to create a deeper shadow on the other side, I need to placed my model further from the wall so the opposite side is less lit by the wall reflection.

- Subject was lit with the flash bouncing directly on the white wall next to her most lit part of the face.

SHOT #3

- Shot settings = 1/125 f5.6 100 ISO

- Flash power = Full power

- To be able to use only one light to create two sides well lit, I understand that i need 2 wall or white surface to bounce my light. So, I placed my subject really close facing a white wall, while I was bouncing my flash on the white wall behind her head at FULL POWER to be able to well lit the face and the hair. With a white ceiling I also have a little bit of light coming from the top.

- Subject was lit with the flash bouncing directly on the white wall behind her head. She is facing a white wall really close to her face.

SHOT #4 (Other exam sheet)

- Ambient reading ( with my light meter) = 1/8 f8 800 ISO

- Shot settings = 1/8 f13 800 ISO

- Flash power = 1/4

- I understand that to create a well exposed and light background I need to put my shutter speed slower to have more light through my lens. Since my background is lit with neon light and my subject is lit with my flash, I need to balance the both light together by adding a green gel to my flash because neon is the ambient light.

- I have a f stop reading at f13 because I wanted my background to be more in focus than the light meter reading was at f8.

- I've put my ISO higher to increase the lighting on my background and also reduced the power of my flash to make sure my subject is not overexposed.

- Subject was lit with the flash bouncing directly on the white ceiling to create a softer light on her, also to have a small soft shadow under her nose as a butterfly style.

SHOT #5

- Ambient reading ( with my light meter) = 1/60 f5.6 100 ISO

- Shot settings = 1/60 f5.6 100 ISO

- Flash power = 1/4

- I understand that to create a well exposed background I need to put my shutter speed slower to have more light through my lens. So I followed my light meter reading and end up having a good exposure for my background and also the subject.

- Subject was lit in front, at 45˚ angle.

PHOTO STORY

In today's economy, the mid-class family represent the parents plus one, two or three children. But I was interested to find a family of more than four children, because the majority of my generation of new parents, from 25 to 30 years old, are planning to have not more than 2 children. Because it is really expensive to have a child, we can't figure out how to have enough money to raise more than two kids and also where will we find the time between work and activities to take care of our child life.

Researching within my entourage, I did found one family who does have the energy and time to raise 6 children from 4 to 18 years old. That's what I called a Big Family. Lucie Mésonéro, the mother of all the 6 children, gave birth to 3 boys with her first marriage ( Michael 18 yrs., Daniel 15 yrs., Jessy 13 yrs.). Unfortunately the father of her 3 sons died and left the mom alone with her 3 children. After few years, she got a second relationship with the father of her two older daughters, Davidson 10 yrs. and Marie-Neige 7 yrs. She didn't got so lucky again with this man who left her alone with the 5 children. He left the family house and never gave news from now on. Finally, as of today's date, she is leaving a happy relationship with Stephane and the 5 children, and they are proud parents of the last children of the Mésonéro family, Anastasia 4 years old.

From this photo reportage, I learned that a big family is not necessarily always doing everything as a group. Each person is so different from another one and because each one as a different life path depending on their situation, they are not feeling the same way. But I've also learned that even if all the children don't have the same father, the mother is there to remember them that they are loved and part of a beautiful family who care about them.

It was a great experience to visit this family and learned from them.

Daniel is the most independent kid of the family. Really quiet.

While Marie-Neige is crying to have access to the TV in the kitchen, Davidson is watching her favorite movie. The learning of sharing with brother and sister is not always easy!

Few minutes after crying, Marie-Neige seems happy doing funny faces to the camera. While older brother, Jessy (13 yrs. old) is making fun of her.

Earth Day / Wednesday 22nd, 2009

The Aveda company in partnership with WaterCan organized, for the earth day, a walk in Montreal and many other Canada's cities. The goal was to collect $250,000 to provide clean water, basic sanitation and hygiene education to the world's poorest people. We walked 6 km, which represent the average distance that African and Asian women walk to find clean water.

I'm super busy these days with work and school! I know I should put more post...but be sure that I'm working hard to plan a big summer ahead with amazing photography projects. I'm acutally planning to do an exposition with fashion pictures at the end of summer 09, in Montreal. So I'll keep my blog updates with all feeds I'll be able to post.

RETOUCHING RETOUCHING.

This is a school project that I have created this week in studio with a friend. My goal?!?! Emulate the picture of Lindsay Lohan from Interview Magazine from photographers Mert & Marcus piggott. These two photographers are so good, the perfect match. So that was a good challenge of retouching for me since my friend don't have the same face than Lindsay Lohan.

I now only hope I'll have a fantastic grade on this assignment.

I just want to share this picture that I randomly found on web today! Isn't it funny how all the photographers are in the same spot to take their shot? After this long day they will have to sell this picture to a national newspaper, but wait a minute......who's gonna have the priority and the best cropped picture!?!?!?! I just think it's good picture of photographers at work! ; )

This shot was done in december 08 for one of my last assignment of the semester. The first idea was not exactly what the picture is showing, but I still like the final result. I will need to start thinking of new ideas for the next semester that is coming soon.....hum...ok go back to work!

A new year of projects is starting

A new year is starting! Yeap yeap. I realized that since I'm a full-time graphic designer and also student in photography (full-time at night) I need to stop working on a computer. My life is all around my beautiful MAC laptop and I think I can work more hours on this technology then talking to people. But even if I want to leave a little bit more my laptop behind me I also need to create my blog that I've started last year and never finished. So here it is...MY BLOG! I will try to upload the best of my photography and graphic design work as often as I can do it.
